Trip overview

Epidaurus on day one, Monemvasia's lanes at first light, a Mani sea kayak morning, Voidokilia at dusk.

This is a private ten-day trip from Athens Airport and back to Athens, through the Argolida, Arcadia, Laconia, the Mani and Messinia in a private vehicle, with our English-speaking team from Kalamata throughout and licensed guides at the four great sites. Choose the Peloponnese over the islands if you want Mycenae, mountain villages and a swimming coast on one road.

The order follows the history. Epidaurus and Mycenae come first, then the Arcadian villages on the Menalon Trail, then Byzantine Mystras on the way south and the Mani at the end, where the sea takes over. Monemvasia is the stop we would least shorten: the car-free lanes are quiet at first light, before the day visitors drive in. Other fixed moments are a morning sea kayak off Kardamyli and the last light over Voidokilia on day 9.

The pace is gentle to moderate. Two walks, in the Lousios gorge and on the Menalon Trail, can be shortened or skipped. Day 3 has about two hours on the road, day 10 about 2.5 hours, and day 7 is the longest. We run it April to June and September to November; in July and August Mycenae and Mystras are open hillsides with little shade.

Why this trip

The full arc over a single coast

Theatre seats at Epidaurus

A licensed guide walks the 4th-century BC theatre with you on day 1, from the stage up its 55 rows of limestone seats, before the welcome dinner in Nafplio.

Lion Gate with a licensed guide

A morning on the citadel at Mycenae, from the gate carved around 1250 BC to the tholos tomb below the walls, with the afternoon free in Nafplio.

Cliff monasteries of the Lousios gorge

A gentle afternoon walk on day 3 under the cliffs to Prodromou, a monastery built into the rock face above the river, after about two hours into Arcadia.

First light inside Monemvasia

Two nights at the rock mean the car-free lower town before the day visitors arrive, then a swim off the rocks below the walls.

Sea kayaks below the Mani towers

A morning paddle along the Outer Mani shore from Kardamyli, equipment included, with a picnic on a beach and the 18th-century towers of old Kardamyli after lunch.

Messene by day, Voidokilia at dusk

A licensed guide at Ancient Messene, founded in 369 BC, then the omega-shaped bay of Voidokilia and the Gialova wetlands as the light drops on day 9.

Day by day

Ten days, four bases, one team

Two nights in Nafplio, Arcadia and Monemvasia, then three in Kardamyli at the end.

Arrive

Corinth Canal and Epidaurus on the road to Nafplio

Athens → Corinth Canal → Epidaurus → Nafplio

We meet you at Athens Airport on arrival. The day is planned around a morning landing, because there are two stops before dinner. The first is the Corinth Canal, cut through the rock and opened in 1893.

Epidaurus follows, where a licensed guide walks the 4th-century BC theatre with you, from the stage to the top of its 55 rows. A voice at the centre still reaches the back without effort. The welcome dinner in Nafplio tonight is the first of three hosted tables. Keep the day bag light: both stops are on foot from the vehicle.

Day 2
02

Mycenae in the morning, Nafplio after lunch

Nafplio → Mycenae → Nafplio

A short drive north brings you to Mycenae for the first entry of the day. A licensed guide spends the morning on the citadel: the Lion Gate, carved around 1250 BC, walls of blocks so large later Greeks credited them to the Cyclopes, and the tholos tomb below. Lunch is back in Nafplio, and the afternoon is yours, with the path below the Palamidi leading down to the sea for a swim. Dinner is free tonight; tell us by breakfast and we reserve a table. Wear shoes with grip, since the ramp up to the gate is steep and uneven.

Overnight in Nafplio
Day 3
03

Into Arcadia and the Lousios gorge

Nafplio → Lousios gorge → Dimitsana or Manna

The Lousios gorge walk comes after about two hours on the road, climbing out of the Argolida plain into the mountains of Arcadia. Lunch is on the way. Our team walks the gorge with you in the afternoon, a gentle route under the cliffs to Prodromou, a monastery built straight into the rock face above the river. Dinner is free in the village tonight, at a table we book on request. If knees or weather argue against the full walk, say so at breakfast and we shorten it.

Overnight in Dimitsana or Manna
Day 4
04

Menalon Trail and Dimitsana's water mills

Menalon Trail → Dimitsana

Morning is for an easy stage of the Menalon Trail, the waymarked path between the Arcadian villages, walked with our team. Afterwards, Dimitsana’s open-air water power museum shows how the river once drove the mills, the tannery and the gunpowder works that supplied the revolution of 1821. Lunch is in the village. Tonight is the second hosted dinner, at a village table in Arcadia. The table is booked for the evening, so the hours between lunch and dinner are free for rest.

Overnight in Dimitsana or Manna
Day 5
05

Sparta, Mystras and south to Monemvasia

Arcadia → Sparta → Mystras → Monemvasia

Sparta is the first town on the road south, and Mystras climbs the slope just beyond it. A licensed guide leads the visit to the Byzantine city: palaces, churches with 14th-century frescoes and lanes rising towards the castle. The site is steep, with long stretches of open hillside. Lunch is on the way, and the afternoon drive ends at Monemvasia, where the evening is free and we book a table on request. Bring a hat and water for the upper town.

Overnight in Monemvasia
Day 6
06

First light in the lower town

Monemvasia

First light is why the trip stays two nights here. A single causeway links the rock to the mainland, and the car-free lanes of the lower town are quiet before the day visitors arrive. We walk in early, and the rest of the day runs slowly: lunch, then a swim off the rocks below the walls. The evening is free inside the kastro, the walled town, with a table reserved on request. Pack swim kit and shoes that cope with a rock entry.

Overnight in Monemvasia
Day 7
07

Diros caves by boat, harbour lunch in Gerolimenas

Monemvasia → Diros caves → Gerolimenas → Kardamyli

Across Laconia and into the Mani, this is the longest road day of the trip, broken by two stops. Diros comes first, where a boat carries you through the flooded caves under the stalactites. Lunch is at the harbour in Gerolimenas on the Mani’s west coast, before the drive north to Kardamyli and three nights by the sea. The evening is free, and we book a table on request. Sit on the left going north for the sea side.

Overnight in Kardamyli
Day 8
08

Sea kayak along the Outer Mani shore

Kardamyli

Sea kayaks launch from the Kardamyli shore in the morning, and our team paddles the Outer Mani coast with you, equipment included. The picnic lunch is on a beach along the way. Afternoon is for old Kardamyli, where 18th-century stone towers stand above the newer village by the sea. Dinner is free tonight, with a table booked on request. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a dry layer for the kayak.

Overnight in Kardamyli
Day 9
09

Ancient Messene, then Voidokilia at dusk

Kardamyli → Ancient Messene → Voidokilia → Gialova → Kardamyli

A licensed guide walks Ancient Messene with you, a city founded in 369 BC whose stadium and walls still stand in open Messinian farmland. Lunch is on the road west to Voidokilia, a sand bay curved like an omega, and the Gialova wetlands for the last of the day’s light. The farewell dinner is in Kalamata tonight, the third hosted table. Bring binoculars for the wetland birds. If you prefer the final night at Costa Navarino, ask us before the trip.

Kalamata old town and olive oil, back to Athens

Kalamata → Athens

Kalamata is the last morning before Athens. Our team walks the old town with you, then an olive oil tasting introduces the koroneiki, the small olive behind most Messinian oil, poured young and peppery. Lunch is in Kalamata. The private transfer to Athens takes about 2.5 hours, arriving in the late afternoon. Plan an evening flight or a night in Athens rather than a tight connection.

Stay & eat

Old town, mountain village, rock and sea

The four bases mix five-star hotels and boutique stays. In Nafplio the hotel is in the old town, a walk from the harbour and the path below the Palamidi. In Arcadia it is Manna or a stay in Dimitsana, a stone mountain village with quiet nights. At Monemvasia, Kinsterna faces the rock from outside the walls; a room inside the kastro means car-free lanes and carrying luggage up stone steps. Kardamyli takes the two nights, by the sea and close to the kayak launch. Kalamata is the exception with one night and Costa Navarino can replace it if you let us know.

On the table

Three hosted tables and six free evenings

We host three dinners: the welcome in Nafplio on day 1, a village table in Arcadia on day 4 and the farewell in Kardamyli on day 9. Every breakfast and lunch is included, among them a harbour lunch in Gerolimenas on day 7 and a beach picnic on the kayak morning.

Day 10 ends with an olive oil tasting in Kalamata, built around the koroneiki olive. Taste the young oil before the aged; the pepper at the back of the throat is the point.

The other six evenings are free. Tell us by breakfast and we book a table.

What can move, and what stays fixed

The order of the regions stays, because it follows the history from Mycenae to Byzantine Mystras, and so does the two-night rhythm at each base before Kardamyli. A night in one place leaves no morning in it, and Monemvasia at first light is the reason for staying.

Inside that frame, the trip can be tailored. Either walk can be shortened or dropped, the final night can move to Costa Navarino, and free evenings stay yours, with tables booked on request.
