Trip overview

Messene treasure hunt, Voidokilia swim, a 4 km paddle to the Blue Cave, a 30 m zipline at Polylimnio.

This is a private eight-day family trip in Messinia. It starts and ends at Athens or Kalamata airport, with our team driving you to each day’s outing and English-speaking guides leading it. Ancient Messene, the Gialova lagoon, the Kardamyli shore and the Polylimnio waterfalls all lie within reach of one hotel in Kalamata. One base over a string of hotels, for families with children who would rather unpack once and spend the energy in the water.

The order climbs in effort. A 2 km walk through Ancient Messene comes first, with a treasure hunt among the stones. Next is a 3 km lagoon walk that ends on the sand at Voidokilia. A free day follows, then a cookery class, a 4 km paddle to the Blue Cave and, on the last full day, the jumps and abseils at Polylimnio.

The physical level is easy. Every jump and abseil has a footpath around it, and day four is entirely free. Each outing runs out and back from Kalamata, so there is road time most days: a fair trade for never packing. We run it in June and September, never in July or August.

“George knows which rock the kids can jump from at Polylimnio, and which one they can't. That's the difference.”Head of water operations, senior sea kayak guide
Why this trip

One hotel over five, for a family week

Treasure hunt in Ancient Messene

A licensed guide turns the theatre, the stadium and the sanctuary of Asclepius into a set of clues over about 2 km, followed by a pottery or ancient-game workshop.

Binoculars on the Gialova lagoon

A 3 km guided walk looking for kingfisher and heron, ending at Voidokilia, the omega-shaped sand beach, for a swim and a picnic by the water.

Paddle into the Blue Cave

Giorgos Kontargiris, a British Canoeing coach, leads about 4 km of sea kayaking past cliffs and sea caves on the Kardamyli shore, with a swim inside the cave.

Jumps and a 30 m zipline

Canyoning at Polylimnio: jumps into pools, abseils down waterfalls and a zipline over the lake. Every jump has a footpath around it for anyone who prefers to walk.

Pita and spinach pies, made together

A family cookery class in a kitchen garden, with a chef used to teaching young cooks. Parents and children work the same bench and make pita bread and spinach pies.

Seven nights, no packing

One 4-star hotel near the sea in Kalamata for the whole week, so each day trip starts from the same room and the swim kit dries in one place.

Arrival in Kalamata, dinner with the guides

Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport → Kalamata

Our team meets you at Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport. Morning flights suit the day best. Anything landing before 17:00 works, and we are flexible around later arrivals. The transfer runs straight to the hotel in Kalamata.

The rest of the afternoon is free. The hotel sits on the seafront or close to the city beaches, so the first swim of the week can be in the Messinian Gulf before dark. Tonight is the welcome dinner in Kalamata with your guides, who walk through the week ahead. Pack swim kit in your hand luggage, so the water does not wait on a suitcase.

Ancient Messene on foot, then pottery

Kalamata → Ancient Messene → Kalamata

From Kalamata the vehicle drives north-west to Ancient Messene, the walled city founded in 369 BC. A licensed guide leads about three hours and 2 km on foot through the theatre, the sanctuary of Asclepius and down to the stadium. A treasure hunt turns the ruins into clues for the younger members of the group. Lunch is a picnic under the olive trees. The afternoon workshop is pottery or an ancient Greek game, and the evening is free back in Kalamata. Bring a hat and a full water bottle for the walk between the stones.

Gialova lagoon walk, swim at Voidokilia

Kalamata → Gialova Lagoon → Voidokilia → Kalamata

A guided walk of about 3 km circles the Gialova lagoon, binoculars in hand: kingfisher and heron are likely sightings, though never certain. The vehicle brings you west from Kalamata, and the walk stays at the trip’s easy level throughout. It ends at Voidokilia, the sand beach curved like an omega, where the swim comes first and the picnic follows by the water. Altogether it is about three hours on foot and in the sea. The afternoon and evening are free back in Kalamata. Keep a dry layer in the vehicle for the drive home.

Day 4
04

A free day in Kalamata

Morning is the time for Kalamata’s Central Market, with its fruit, olives and cheese counters. The rest of the day is yours. The Municipal Railway Park keeps old locomotives in the open, the historic centre and the city beaches are close, and the marina walk at sunset is the city’s evening volta, the walk along the front. Lunch and dinner are your own, and your guide has restaurant suggestions for every taste. After three days of walking and swimming, sleep late if the week has asked for it.

Day 5
05

Bread and spinach pies in a kitchen garden

A kitchen garden is the classroom today. Our vehicle takes you from Kalamata to the family cookery class and brings you back. The chef is experienced at teaching children, and parents and children work at the same table. The class starts with pita bread made from the dough up, then moves on to spinach pies, spanakopita, folded by hand. Nothing else is planned, and the rest of the day and the evening are free in Kalamata. Tell us about vegetarian, vegan or other dietary needs before you travel, so the class is set up for them.

Day 6

Kayaking the Kardamyli shore to the Blue Cave

Kalamata → Kardamyli → Kalamata

Giorgos Kontargiris, our head of water operations and a British Canoeing Advanced Water Sea Kayak Coach, runs today’s paddle on the Kardamyli shore, south of Kalamata. A technique and safety briefing comes first. The route then covers about 4 km past cliffs and sea caves to the Blue Cave, where you swim inside. A swim stop and a picnic break the outing halfway, and the whole thing takes about four hours. The drive back reaches Kalamata for a free evening. Wear a hat with a strap and sun cream that holds in salt water.

Day 7

Canyoning and zipline at Polylimnio

Kalamata → Polylimnio → Kalamata

Waterfall spray marks the 2 km canyon at Polylimnio, about three hours with the guides. Wetsuits, helmets and harnesses are provided for the jumps into pools, the abseils down the falls and the 30 m zipline over the lake. Every jump and abseil has a footpath around it, so anyone can step out of any section without holding the group up. A picnic follows the canyon. The farewell dinner is tonight at a seaside restaurant in Kalamata. Pack shoes that can get wet and a full change of clothes for the vehicle.

Transfer to the airport

Kalamata → Kalamata Airport or Athens Airport

After breakfast the transfer leaves the hotel for Kalamata Airport or Athens Airport, timed to your flight. There is no activity today, so the morning sets its own pace. A last swim on the seafront fits before breakfast for anyone who wants one. Tell us your flight time when you book, and we set the departure from Kalamata around it. For Athens, a later flight leaves the most room in the day. Keep a dry bag for the wet swim kit, so it stays out of the suitcase.

Stay & eat

Seven nights near the sea in Kalamata

The whole week is spent in one 4-star hotel in Kalamata, on the seafront or close to the city beaches. Rooms are twin share, and a 5-star upgrade is quoted on request.

The location does two jobs. It puts the sea within reach before breakfast and after each outing, and it keeps the week’s four day trips to Ancient Messene, Gialova, Kardamyli and Polylimnio running from the same door. For families, the practical gain is that wet kit, chargers and the week’s purchases stay where they are, and no morning is spent repacking.

The trade is road time: every outing goes out and comes back the same day. We think one good room beats four checkouts for a week with children.

On the table

Picnics on the trail, pies you bake yourself

Two dinners are hosted, both in Kalamata: the welcome dinner with your guides on day 1, and the farewell dinner at a seaside restaurant on day 7 after the canyon.

Lunches on the activity days are picnics the guides prepare: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit, eaten under the olives at Messene or by the water at Voidokilia. They are the better lunch of the week. On day 5 the table is yours to make, with pita bread and spinach pies from the cookery class.

On free evenings your guide recommends restaurants. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary needs are catered for with notice.

Breakfast
Breakfast buffet at the hotel in Kalamata every morning, days 2 to 8.
Picnic
Guide-made picnic under the olive trees at Ancient Messene on day 2: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit.
Dinner
Welcome dinner with your guides in Kalamata on day 1, the night you arrive.
Dinner
Farewell dinner at a seaside restaurant in Kalamata on day 7, after the canyoning at Polylimnio.

Tell us what to change

The hotel can move up to 5-star, the airport can be Athens or Kalamata at either end, and every meal can be set for vegetarian, vegan or other needs with notice. The free day stays free, and you can fill it however you like.

Two things we will not change: the minimum age of 8, which the canyon is set for, and the months. We do not run it in July or August. If your family needs something else, tell us and we will say plainly whether this trip can be tailored to it.
