Trip overview

Epidaurus theatre, Mycenae's Lion Gate in the morning, Byzantine Mystras, Messene's walls and Olympia's 5th-century workshop of Pheidias.

Six days by private vehicle from Athens Airport and back, through the Argolida, Laconia and Messinia, with a day out to Olympia. Our team drives, and a guide meets you at each of the five sites: licensed guides at Epidaurus, Mycenae, Mystras and Olympia, and at Ancient Messene the guide who works the site year round. If you see only one site slowly, make it Messene: walls, stadium and theatre on one hillside, with a fraction of Olympia’s visitors.

The route runs south and then west, so the trip changes hotel only once, and Mystras sits on that transfer day rather than costing a day of its own. Mycenae comes on the second morning, after the theatre at Epidaurus and a welcome dinner in Nafplio on the first evening. The night you reach Kalamata, dinner is hosted in the old town.

The pace is gentle: one to two hours on foot at each site, with shade and pace managed. Day three carries the most road, day five is a full day to Olympia and back, and day six ends with the drive to Athens. We run it April to June and September to November. Not in July or August: Mycenae and Mystras have little shade, and summer heat turns a gentle two hours into hard going.

“Messene on a weekday morning: a stadium, a theatre and the walls Epaminondas raised in 369 BC, with hardly anyone in any of them except the guide who works the site all year.”Fotis Kontargiris - Guide
Why this trip

Five sites, each with a guide

Theatre and healing at Epidaurus

A licensed guide takes you through the sanctuary of Asklepios and up the 55 rows of the theatre on day one, the first stop out of Athens.

The Lion Gate before midday

Mycenae on the second morning with a licensed guide, the citadel walked before the heat builds, then the afternoon free in Nafplio.

Mystras, then over Taygetos

The last capital of Byzantine Greece, taken with a licensed guide on the way south, then the Langada pass across the mountain to Kalamata.

A whole city at Ancient Messene

Walls, stadium and theatre on one hillside, walked with the guide who works the site year round. The fortifications run for nearly 9 km.

Where Pheidias worked at Olympia

A full day out from Kalamata: the stadium and the workshop where Pheidias made the gold-and-ivory Zeus, with a licensed guide, then the farewell dinner.

Day by day

6 days at a slow pace.

Two nights in Nafplio, three in Kalamata, with Mystras on the one transfer between them.

Arrival
01
Arrive

Epidaurus on the way, evening in Nafplio

Athens → Epidaurus → Nafplio

Athens Airport is the meeting point, at your arrival time, and our driver takes the road west to the Argolida. At Epidaurus a licensed guide walks the sanctuary of Asklepios and the theatre with you, gently, for one to two hours. The theatre’s 55 rows still carry a voice from the stage to the top seats, and the guide will usually prove it. From there it is on to Nafplio, a free hour to settle in, and the hosted welcome dinner in town. Wear flat shoes with grip: the limestone seats are worn smooth.

Mycenae in the morning, Nafplio after

Nafplio → Mycenae → Nafplio

A short drive north from Nafplio reaches Mycenae in the morning, and we arrive as the site opens. A licensed guide spends one to two hours on the citadel with you, at an easy pace: the Lion Gate, the grave circle and the walls of stones too large for any human arm, which later Greeks credited to the Cyclopes. Above the gate, the two carved lions have lost their heads. Lunch is back in Nafplio and the afternoon is free. Dinner is your own tonight; tell us by breakfast and we book a table.

Day 3
03

Byzantine Mystras and the Langada pass

Nafplio → Sparta → Mystras → Langada pass → Kalamata

Breakfast is early, because this is the day with the most road: south through Sparta to Mystras, then west over the Langada pass to Kalamata. At Mystras a licensed guide leads you through the churches and lanes of the hill town for one to two hours, on steep stone paths taken slowly. Mystras held out as the last capital of Byzantine Greece until 1460. Lunch fits around the visit before the climb across Taygetos, and the evening ends at the hosted dinner in Kalamata’s old town. Keep a warm layer in the vehicle: the pass runs high.

Day 4
04

Ancient Messene with its own guide

Kalamata → Ancient Messene → Kalamata

The guide who works Ancient Messene year round meets us at the site, north-west of Kalamata. With them you walk the walls, the theatre and the stadium over one to two gentle hours, on paths that stay mostly level. Nearly 9 km of fortifications, built in the 4th century BC, still ring the city. After lunch the drive back to Kalamata leaves the afternoon free, and the evening is yours. Ask us at breakfast if you want a table booked for dinner.

Day 5
05

Olympia for the day, farewell in Kalamata

Kalamata → Olympia → Kalamata

Olympia is a full day out from Kalamata, north along the west side of the Peloponnese. A licensed guide takes you through the sanctuary for one to two hours, from the stadium to the workshop where Pheidias built the gold-and-ivory statue of Zeus. Lunch is included before the return to Kalamata, where our team hosts the farewell dinner. If a long road day suits you less, we can swap Olympia for a day on the coast or in town; tell us when you book.

Kayak or gorge, then back to Athens

Kalamata → Athens

Kayak or a short gorge walk: the last morning is your choice, both easy, with equipment included. It is a change of pace after five sites, and the only time on the trip the stone gives way to water or shade. Once you are back and changed, our driver takes the road from Kalamata to Athens, the final transfer of the trip. Pack swim kit and a towel in your day bag if you choose the kayak.

Stay & eat

Two bases, one change of hotel

Nafplio, two nights: the base for Epidaurus on the way in and Mycenae on the second morning, with the town itself for the free afternoon and evening.

Kalamata, three nights: the base for Ancient Messene, the Olympia day and the last morning outdoors, with the old town for the hosted dinner on day three.

Both are five-star hotels or boutique stays, which we select for each booking. Three nights in Kalamata means you unpack once for the second half of the trip, and the only day that moves you from one hotel to the next is the one with Mystras on it.

On the table

Three hosted tables, and the rest your choice

Our team hosts three dinners: the welcome in Nafplio on day one, the old town in Kalamata on day three and the farewell in Kalamata on day five. Breakfast and lunch are included every day, lunch set around the site visits.

Messinia is olive country, and its oil comes mostly from the small koroneiki olive. Look out for sfela, a brined Messinian cheese sharper than feta, at the Kalamata tables.

The evenings of days two and four are free. Tell us at breakfast and we book a table; Nafplio is the easier town for picking a place on foot.

Dinner
Welcome dinner in Nafplio on day 1, hosted by our team after the drive from Epidaurus.
Dinner
Hosted dinner in Kalamata's old town on day 3, the evening you arrive over the Langada pass.
Dinner
Farewell dinner in Kalamata on day 5, hosted by our team after the day at Olympia.

It is per person sharing a double room, by group size; the table on this page gives each band. Travelling alone in a room carries a single supplement, quoted with your trip.

We run it April to June and September to November. April and November are the coolest months for walking the sites; June and September are warmer, so we keep the visits to the morning.

Tell us which day to change

The trip can be tailored where it makes sense: Olympia can become a day on the coast or in town, the last morning is kayak or gorge walk as you prefer, and the two free evenings are yours to fill or to hand to us for a booking. Larger private groups, up to 14, travel the same route.

What we will not change is the timing of Mycenae and Mystras. They are visited in the morning and outside July and August, because both are open hillsides with little shade.
