Trip overview

Nemea's athletes' tunnel, the Lousios gorge by 9am, the Pliovouni saddle, and a kayak into Kardamyli's Blue Cave.

Eight days and seven nights, Athens to Athens, by private vehicle with our trail-running guides and licensed guides at Nemea and Messene. Three mornings run the Menalon Trail through Arcadia’s fir forest. The rest are on the Messinian coast, where afternoons go to massage, yoga, sauna and the sea. Run Mainalo first and the coast second: the big climbs come while legs are fresh, and the firs keep the mornings cool.

Nemea comes first, with the vaulted tunnel athletes walked through around 330 BC. The Lousios gorge descent starts by 9am on day 2, and day 4 crosses the Pliovouni saddle, the high point, before lunch in Elati. Then the load drops: Ithome’s summit early on day 5, a 7.45am loop above Kardamyli before the kayak, lakes and the lagoon road on day 7. Ithome before Messene, not after, because the summit run is done before the site heats up.

Expect three to four and a half hours on the trail on each Menalon day. Steep pitches are walked, and every session can be walked. Days 1, 5 and 8 are long on the road, about two and a half to three and a half hours each. We run it in May, June, September and October. Not in July or August, when the Messinian trails are too hot. Not from November to April either: the Viros gorge floods and Mainalo is cold.

“The firs take the hard mornings; the sea gives the legs back by the afternoon.”
Why this trip

Firs for the long days, sea for the recovery

Athletes' graffiti in Nemea's tunnel

A licensed guide leads you through the vaulted entrance to the stadium of around 330 BC, just over 36 m long, where runners scratched their names into the walls.

Down the Lousios gorge to Dimitsana

Menalon Trail section 1 drops by stone to the river, past Moni Prodromou built into the gorge wall: 13 km and about three to four hours on foot.

Pliovouni saddle, the high point

Day 4 is the longest and highest: about 14 km over the Bilali pass and the Koskitsa plateau to the saddle below Pliovouni, 1,643 m, then down to a chapel.

Ithome's summit before Messene's stadium

A dirt-track run to the plateau at about 800 m and the Old Voulkano monastery, then two hours with a licensed guide in Ancient Messene's theatre and stadium.

Kayak into the Blue Cave

Giorgos and the kayak team paddle the Outer Mani cliffs from Kardamyli, into the Blue Cave when the sea is calm, with lunch on a cove reached only by water.

Lakes, lagoon and olive oil

Polylimnio's 15 to 17 lakes and the 25 m Kadoula waterfall, a flat run on the Gialova lagoon road to Voidokilia, then a grove walk and tasting with a producer.

Day by day

Seven guided runs in eight days

Four nights at Manna on Mainalo, three on the Kalamata seafront, and no one-night stops.

Arrival
01
Arrive

Nemea's stadium, then up to the Mainalo firs

Athens International Airport → Ancient Nemea → Manna, Mainalo

Our driver meets you in arrivals at Athens airport, so book a flight landing by 9am. Ancient Nemea comes first, with a licensed guide for about 75 minutes: the stadium of around 330 BC, the vaulted tunnel just over 36 m long where athletes scratched their names (one reads NIKO), the changing room and the temple of Zeus. Lunch in Nemea is light, with a glass of agiorgitiko, the valley’s red grape, for anyone who wants one.

Manna is about 1 hour 40 minutes on, in the fir forest; road time today is about 3 hours 20 minutes in all. Around 5.30pm there is a short shakeout run on forest tracks, then 20 minutes of mobility. The welcome dinner at Manna is booked for the whole group.

Down the Lousios gorge, Stemnitsa to Dimitsana

Stemnitsa → Moni Prodromou → Philosophou monasteries → Dimitsana

By 9am (8am in June and September) we are on the trail at Stemnitsa, about 1 hour 10 minutes by road. Section 1 of the Menalon Trail covers 13 km with 640 m of climbing and 760 m of descent, opening with a steep, continuous stone drop to the river. A trail-running guide sets the pace; plan on three to four hours of running and walking. Moni Prodromou is built into the gorge wall, a stone staircase links the Old and New Philosophou monasteries, and the stream crosses the path in places. Lunch is in Dimitsana, then 50 minutes back to Manna for the sauna and hammam. Dinner is free; we book. Bring a layer that covers shoulders and knees for the monastery.

Kernitsa to Valtesiniko through the fir forest

Kernitsa monastery → Sfyrida → Lasta junction → Magouliana → Valtesiniko

Kernitsa monastery, built into a single boulder above a stone bridge, is about 20 minutes from Manna. From there the trail runs through fir forest to the Sfyrida hermitage and its spring at 1,000 m, then makes the day’s one sustained climb, about 250 m, to the Lasta junction at 1,250 m. A level traverse passes the Gavros spring on the way to Magouliana, and the final section into Valtesiniko is non-technical. Lunch is in Valtesiniko square, followed by sauna and hammam at Manna and an hour of yoga at 6pm. Dinner is free; we book. The easier option is to stop in Magouliana and ride the rest in the vehicle.

Over the Pliovouni saddle to Zoodochos Pigi

Zygovisti → Asoves → Bilali pass → Koskitsa plateau → Pliovouni saddle → Vlachika plateau → Zoodochos Pigi chapel → Elati

Section 3 of the Menalon Trail is the longest and highest day: about 14 km from Zygovisti, 45 minutes by road, on the trail by 8.30am. Expect three and a half to four and a half hours of running and walking. The route climbs steeply from Asoves to the Bilali pass, crosses the Koskitsa plateau and the saddle between Pliovouni (1,643 m) and Fragovouni, then drops a steep 150 m into Vlachika before the Paleochori fountain and the chapel. Lunch is in Elati, 25 minutes from Manna. A 60-minute sports massage follows, the cave pool is ours from 7pm, and the mid-trip dinner is hosted in Arcadia. Carry your own water today.

Ithome's summit, then Ancient Messene

Manna → Megalopoli → Mavrommati → Ithome → Ancient Messene → Kalamata

We leave Manna at 7.30am for the drive of about two hours to Mavrommati. The run follows a dirt track to Ithome’s summit plateau at about 800 m, past the sanctuary of Artemis Limnatis to the Old Voulkano monastery, probably the site of the sanctuary of Zeus Ithomatas, then takes a rocky path down to the Klepsydra spring: about 7 km and 400 m of climbing. Around 11.30am a licensed guide spends about two hours with you in Ancient Messene: theatre, Asklepieion, stadium and walls about 9 km around. Late lunch is in Mavrommati, then 40 minutes to Kalamata and a sea swim. Dinner is free. The site has little shade, so wear a hat.

Kardamyli on foot, then by sea kayak

Kalamata → Kardamyli → Old Kardamyli → Agia Sofia → Viros gorge → Kardamyli harbour → Blue Cave → Kalamata

Kardamyli is about 45 minutes from Kalamata, so breakfast is early and we leave at 7am. At 7.45am a 6.4 km loop climbs 190 m through Old Kardamyli, Agia Sofia, the Viros gorge and the ruins of the Lykaki monastery, on rock and steps, technical in places. Giorgos and the kayak team launch at 9.30am from the old customs house at St John’s harbour, along the Outer Mani cliffs and into the Blue Cave if the sea is calm. Lunch is a picnic and a swim on a pebble cove reached only by water, back by about 1.30pm, before the south-westerly. A sports massage follows from 4pm; dinner is free. You must be able to swim. Bring 1 L of water, swim kit, a hat and dry clothes.

Polylimnio lakes and the lagoon road to Voidokilia

Kalamata → Polylimnio (Charavgi) → Divari → Voidokilia → olive farm → Kalamata

At 8am the vehicle leaves for the trailhead near Charavgi, about 50 minutes away. Polylimnio is a walk of about 3 km and two hours past 15 to 17 small lakes and the Kadoula waterfall, about 25 m high, with a swim at Lake Kadi when conditions allow. Divari is 35 minutes on, and from there a flat run follows the Gialova lagoon dirt road to Voidokilia, a Natura 2000 site for migrating birds, with a swim below Nestor’s Cave. Lunch is at an olive farm with a koroneiki producer: grove walk and tasting, cooking on request. Yoga and breathing by the sea come at 6pm, then the farewell dinner in Kalamata. Wear shoes that can get wet.

Depart

Seafront run, then the road to Athens

Kalamata seafront → Athens International Airport

An easy, unguided run on the flat Kalamata seafront before breakfast, or a walk and a stretch, closes the week’s running. Breakfast is the last included meal. Leaving at 9am, the vehicle covers the drive of about three hours to Athens airport with one stop and arrives around 1pm. Book a flight after 3pm. Pack the night before: the run, breakfast and the road leave little room in the morning.

Stay & eat

A 1929 sanatorium, then the Kalamata seafront

Manna, four nights: a sanatorium built in 1929 in the Mainalo fir forest, now a hotel of 32 rooms. The location puts the Lousios gorge about 1 hour 10 minutes away and Kernitsa about 20 minutes away, so the trail days start without a long drive. After the runs there is a sauna, a hammam and a cave pool, booked for the group from 7pm on day 4. The forest is quiet because there is no village around it, so evenings are spent at the hotel or in a village taverna we book.

Kalamata, three nights: a five-star hotel on the seafront. The location gives a swim straight from the front after Messene and the flat seafront for the easy run on day 8.

On the table

Chef's tables at Manna, oil from the grove

The welcome dinner on day 1 is at Manna, whose restaurant is run by chef Athinagoras Kostakos. The mid-trip dinner on day 4 is hosted in Arcadia, and the farewell on day 7 is in Kalamata.

Lunch in Nemea is light, in agiorgitiko country, the valley’s red grape. Day 7 ends at an olive farm, with a tasting of oil from koroneiki, the small olive behind most Messinian oil. The best lunch of the week is the picnic on day 6, eaten on a cove only a kayak reaches.

Breakfast is from 7am on run days and earlier on day 6. We collect dietary needs at booking. On the four free evenings we book Manna or a village taverna in Arcadia; Kalamata has a wide choice.

Breakfast
Breakfast at Manna from 7am on run days, served early enough to be on the Lousios trail by 9am.
Picnic
Picnic lunch and a swim on a pebble cove reached only by water, during the Kardamyli kayak tour on day 6.
Lunch
Lunch at the olive farm on day 7 after the grove walk and a tasting of koroneiki oil.

Tell us what to change

The trip can be tailored for your group: a cooking session at the olive farm, extra spa treatments, the easier option on any trail day, or a night in Athens before or after. Running clubs can ask us to fit the days around a training block.

We will not move Mainalo after the coast, or run the trip in July or August. The order puts the big climbs on fresh legs under the firs, and high summer makes the Messinian trails too hot to run well.
