Trip overview

Flamingos on Gialova Lagoon, a swim at Voidokilia, 39 km under Mainalo fir, the Mani coast to Trachila.

Eight days in Messinia, Arcadia and the Outer Mani on e-bikes. Our guides ride with you, and a van carries you and the bikes to each start. An e-bike is the right way to see Messinia, because the motor turns 310 m of climbing to Ancient Messene into a morning that still leaves time for the stadium.

The olive groves around Kalamata come first, so you know the bike before the longer rides. Ancient Messene and Andromonastiro follow, then Gialova Lagoon, where flamingos and herons feed, and lunch above Navarino Bay. A free day sits before the hardest ride, under fir from Stemnitsa to Libovisi. The Mani coast closes the week, with a swim on the way back and the farewell dinner by the sea.

Most rides cover 20 to 26 km in about four hours including breaks. Day six is the exception: 39 km and 890 m of ascent, about five hours. Every ride after day two starts with a van transfer. We run the trip March to June and September to November. It does not run in July or August, when midday heat on the Messinian plain shortens a riding day.

“E-bikes level the terrain, not the experience. You still arrive at Ancient Messene smelling of cypress and warm stone. You just arrive with your knees intact.”Fotis Gkonis - Head of Cycling
Why this trip

Five rides, one free day, seven nights by the sea

Flamingos and herons at Gialova

An easy 22 km ride around the Gialova Lagoon wetland, with a stop at the birdwatching tower. More than 270 bird species have been recorded there, and flamingos feed in the shallows.

Ancient Messene by bike

A 20 km countryside ride brings you to the theatre, the stadium and the fortification walls. You then pass the fortified monastery at Andromonastiro on the way to lunch.

Under fir from Stemnitsa to Libovisi

The hardest day: 39 km and 890 m of ascent on Mainalo's mountain roads and forest tracks, with goat bells around you and a picnic at the remote settlement of Libovisi.

Ride the Outer Mani road to Trachila

A paved coast road from Stoupa through the fishing harbour at Agios Nikolaos to Trachila, 26 km in all. There is a swim on the shaded shore on the way back.

Picnics the guides pack each ride

Five lunches carried on the ride days: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit. One of them is laid out above Navarino Bay after the swim at Voidokilia.

One hotel, no repacking

Seven nights in the same Kalamata hotel by the water. The van does every transfer, so the suitcase stays in the room from day one to day eight.

Landing, transfer and a welcome table in Kalamata

Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport → Kalamata

We meet you at Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport. Morning flights suit best, though anything landing before 17:00 works. Send us your flight times and we set the pickup around them. The van takes you to the hotel in Kalamata, close to the water.

The rest of the afternoon is yours, for a swim off the town beach or a walk along the front. In the evening the guides host the welcome dinner and run the trip briefing: how the bikes work, what each ride covers and what to carry. The table is booked for everyone, so there is nothing to arrange.

Olive groves, chapels and the Kalamata market

Kalamata loop: olive groves → coast → city cycle paths → market

Fotis Gkonis, our head of cycling, fits each e-bike and walks you through the controls before the first ride leaves the hotel. The loop covers 22 km with 210 m of climbing, about four hours including breaks. It runs on earth paths between olive groves, back roads, a stretch of coast and the city cycle paths. Stops are at small chapels in the groves and at the market. Lunch is the first of the guides’ picnics, and the evening is free, with taverna suggestions from the guides. Closed shoes with grip suit the earth paths best.

Messene's stadium and the Andromonastiro walls

Ancient Messene → Andromonastiro → viewpoint over the Messinian plain → Kalamata

Ancient Messene is the day’s goal, reached by van and then by bike through open countryside. The ride is 20 km with 310 m of climbing, about four hours including breaks. On the site you see the theatre, the stadium and the fortification walls, then ride past Andromonastiro, a monastery built inside its own defensive walls. The guides lay out lunch at a viewpoint over the Messinian plain before the van takes you back to Kalamata. The evening is free. Bring a hat and a full water bottle for the walk around the site.

Gialova Lagoon birds and a swim at Voidokilia

Gialova Lagoon → Voidokilia Beach → Navarino Bay → Kalamata

The van drops you at Gialova Lagoon for an easy ride of 22 km with 220 m of climbing, about four hours including breaks. The route circles the wetland, where flamingos and herons feed and more than 270 bird species have been recorded. The birdwatching tower gives the clearest view over the water. Next comes a swim at the curved sand bay of Voidokilia, then a picnic above Navarino Bay. You are back in Kalamata by the afternoon, and dinner is free. Pack swim kit and a towel in the morning.

A free day: old town, market, marina

Mornings in Kalamata start at the central market, where stalls fill early with olives, oil, cheese and fruit. There is no ride today. The old town, the beach and the marina are all within reach of the hotel, and both lunch and dinner are your own. Sea kayaking or a hike can be arranged on request at extra cost. Ask the guides by day three so there is time to book it. Most riders keep the afternoon free, because tomorrow is the longest day of the week.

Fir forest from Stemnitsa to Libovisi

Kalamata → Stemnitsa → Libovisi → Stemnitsa → Kalamata

Under fir on the slopes of Mainalo, today’s ride is the longest and hardest of the week. The van takes you inland to Stemnitsa in Arcadia. From there you ride 39 km with 890 m of ascent on mountain roads and forest tracks, about five hours including breaks. Shepherds work these slopes, and goat and sheep bells carry through the trees. The picnic is at Libovisi, a remote settlement, and the return follows the same route. You are back in Kalamata in the afternoon. Pack a windproof layer, because the forest is cooler than the coast.

Stoupa to Trachila on the Mani coast road

Stoupa → Agios Nikolaos → Agios Dimitrios → Trachila → Stoupa → Kalamata

The Outer Mani ride follows a paved coast road with little traffic: 26 km and 240 m of climbing, about four hours including breaks. From Stoupa you pass the fishing harbour at Agios Nikolaos and Agios Dimitrios, and turn at Trachila. On the way back there is a swim and the last picnic on a shaded stretch of shore. The van returns you to Kalamata, where the guides host the farewell dinner by the sea. The table is booked for the evening, so the afternoon can go on a nap.

Breakfast in Kalamata, transfer to the airport

Kalamata → Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport

Breakfast is the hotel buffet, the seventh of the trip. After it the van takes you and your luggage to Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport, whichever you arrived through or whichever suits your onward flight. The bikes and helmets stay with us. A flight from Athens needs more of the morning on the road than one from Kalamata, so it is worth choosing with that in mind. Send us your departure time when you book and we set the pickup from it.

Stay & eat

Seven nights by the sea in Kalamata

One hotel for the whole week: a 4-star property in Kalamata, on the waterfront or a short walk from the beach. Rooms are twin share with ensuite bathrooms. The location gives you a swim on arrival day, the town front for an evening walk, and the central market and old town within reach on the free day.

A 5-star upgrade is available on request. It changes the room and the hotel, not the plan: the rides, the transfers and the two hosted dinners stay the same.

The single base is the point of the trip. The van brings you back each afternoon, so you unpack on day one and pack again on day eight. Nights end in the same bed, which matters after 39 km on Mainalo.

On the table

Picnics on the ride, two dinners by the water

The guides host two dinners: the welcome in Kalamata on day 1, with the trip briefing, and the farewell by the sea on day 7. Breakfast each morning is the hotel buffet.

Lunch on the five ride days is a picnic the guides prepare: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit. The groves you ride through on day 2 are mostly koroneiki, the small olive behind most Messinian oil. A picnic beats a taverna on a ride day, because nobody waits an hour for the bill with 15 km still to cover.

On free evenings the guides suggest tavernas in Kalamata. Vegetarian, vegan and other diets are catered for with advance notice.

Breakfast
Breakfast buffet at the Kalamata hotel each morning, days 2 to 8.
Dinner
Welcome dinner in Kalamata on day 1, hosted by the guides, with the trip briefing at the table.
Picnic
Bread, cheeses, dips and fruit above Navarino Bay on day 4, after the swim at Voidokilia.
Dinner
Farewell dinner by the sea in Kalamata on day 7, after the Mani coast ride.

What we change and what we keep

Several parts of the trip can be tailored. You can upgrade to a 5-star hotel, add sea kayaking or a hike on the free day, choose either airport, and tell us about any diet in advance.

We keep the single base in Kalamata and the free day before the Stemnitsa ride. The Mainalo day is the hardest of the week, and riders who come to it rested ride it better.
