Trip overview

Corinth Canal on the drive in, Epidaurus' 55 rows, Mycenae by morning, a kayak or e-bike day.

This is a private four-day break from Athens into Corinthia and the Argolida, by private transfer, with licensed guides at Epidaurus and Mycenae. Sleep in Nafplio, not Athens: the two great sites become a morning or an afternoon each, not long day trips on the motorway. The house is inside the old town for the whole stay.

The route runs south from the Corinth Canal, cut through the isthmus rock in 1893, to the theatre at Epidaurus on the first day, so the sites come in the order you reach them. Mycenae follows on the second morning. Evenings are spent in the lanes of Nafplio, and the third day trades stone for the gulf or the plain: a private sea kayak on the Argolic coast, or an e-bike through the orange groves.

The pace is gentle. The drive out takes about two hours with the canal stop, and on day 4 you are back in Athens by mid-afternoon. It runs April to November. In July and August the sites are morning work: Mycenae and Epidaurus are open ground with little shade, and by midday the limestone holds the heat.

“Mycenae at eight, before the coaches from Athens. Arvanitia late in the afternoon, once the heat has gone off the pebbles. Most of this trip is getting the hour right.”Fotis Kontargiris - Guide
Why this trip

Sleep in Nafplio, not Athens

Epidaurus from the upper rows

A licensed guide takes you through the sanctuary and up the 55 rows of the 4th-century BC theatre, where a voice from the stage still carries.

Mycenae before the heat

A licensed guide on the citadel in the morning: the Lion Gate, carved around 1250 BC, and walls of blocks later Greeks credited to the Cyclopes.

Over the Corinth Canal

A stop on the drive in at the cut through the isthmus, finished in 1893, with sheer rock walls dropping to the water below the bridge.

Swim below the Palamidi

A free afternoon on day 2 for the sea under Nafplio's hilltop fortress, a short drive from Mycenae and nothing to plan around until evening.

Paddle the gulf or ride the groves

A private outdoor day with equipment: a sea kayak on the Argolic coast or an e-bike through orange groves, or a free day if you prefer.

Day by day

Mornings at the sites, evenings in the old town

Three nights in Nafplio across four days, with no change of hotel.

Arrive

Corinth Canal and Epidaurus, evening in Nafplio

Athens → Corinth Canal → Epidaurus → Nafplio

Pickup is in Athens after breakfast, at the point we confirm on booking, and the private transfer reaches the Argolida in about two hours including the stop at the Corinth Canal. Lunch comes on the way, and Epidaurus fills the afternoon. A licensed guide takes you through the sanctuary and up into the theatre, built in the 4th century BC with 55 rows of limestone seats. Nafplio’s old town is next, with the evening free until the welcome dinner, at a table reserved ahead. Bring a hat and water for Epidaurus: the upper rows are a climb in full sun.

Mycenae by morning, a free afternoon in Nafplio

Nafplio → Mycenae → Nafplio

Mycenae comes first, out from Nafplio in the morning, with a licensed guide on the citadel. The Lion Gate was carved around 1250 BC, and the walls are built of blocks so large that later Greeks credited them to the Cyclopes. Lunch is included and the afternoon is free back in Nafplio, with a swim below the Palamidi the obvious choice. Dinner tonight is not included; tell us by the morning and we reserve a table. Wear shoes with grip: the stone around the gate is worn smooth.

Day 3
03

Kayak or e-bike on the Argolic coast

Water or wheels today, both private and with equipment included: a sea kayak along the Argolic coast, or an e-bike through the orange groves of the plain around Nafplio. Tell us which you prefer when you book. Either way the grading is gentle, and the gulf or the groves replace the ancient stone of the first two days. Lunch is included, and the farewell dinner is in Nafplio tonight, at a table reserved ahead. The easier option is a free day in the old town instead; say so and we adjust the plan.

Slow morning in Nafplio, back to Athens

Nafplio → Athens

After breakfast the morning in Nafplio is unhurried, with no site to reach and the old town’s lanes and harbour front on foot. The private transfer back through Corinthia to Athens takes about two hours, with lunch included before you reach the city by mid-afternoon. For longer trips, the route turns west here instead, into one of our longer itineraries through the Peloponnese. If you fly out today, book an evening departure: the transfer reaches Athens mid-afternoon.

Stay & eat

A house inside Nafplio's old town

All three nights are in one house inside Nafplio’s old town, so you unpack once and every evening starts on foot. The harbour front, the main square and the lanes under the Palamidi are outside the door, and the welcome and farewell dinners are a short walk away rather than a drive.

The base also shortens the days: Mycenae on day 2 and the outdoor day on day 3 both start and finish here, and you are back in time for an afternoon swim or the evening volta, the walk along the front that fills the waterfront after dark. We confirm the house on booking.

On the table

Two dinners booked, every lunch included

The welcome dinner on day 1 and the farewell dinner on day 3 are both in Nafplio, with tables reserved ahead. Every breakfast and lunch is included across the four days, so the only open meal is dinner on day 2.

Order mezethes (small plates to share) and a bottle of agiorgitiko, Nemea’s red grape, grown just north of the Argolida plain.

For the free evening, tell us by the morning and we reserve a table. A seat on the harbour front is worth the short wait over a table in the busier lanes.

Breakfast
Breakfast at the house in Nafplio each morning of the stay, before Mycenae, the outdoor day and the drive back.
Lunch
Lunch included on all four days, on the road on days 1 and 4 and around the guided morning and outdoor day in between.
Dinner
Welcome dinner in Nafplio on day 1, at a table reserved ahead, after the afternoon at Epidaurus.
Dinner
Farewell dinner in Nafplio on day 3, at a table reserved ahead, after the kayak or e-bike day.

Day 3 is the easiest to change: kayak, e-bike or a free day in Nafplio. We can book dinner on day 2 or turn the last morning west into a longer itinerary instead of back to Athens.

What we will not change is Mycenae in the morning. In summer the citadel has little shade, and a tailored plan that moves it to midday is a worse trip, not a freer one.
