Ten private days, Athens to Athens, through the Argolida, Arcadia’s Mainalo, Laconia, the Mani and Messinia, by private vehicle with our team and licensed guides at Mycenae, the Palace of Nestor and Ancient Messene. Kalamata olives are where this larder starts, not the point of it: the trip goes looking for the red Mavroudi, the white Kydonitsa and a fir honey that never crystallises.
Nemea’s Agiorgitiko and the pink-skinned Moschofilero of the Mantineia plateau come first, then the mountain dairies of Vytina, Malvasia at Monemvasia and the smoked pork of the Mani, so the order follows the table from vineyard to sea and the food grows saltier as the road nears the coast. The moments to plan around: the rock at Monemvasia at first light, red shrimp at Koilada at lunch, and Kalamata’s market on a Wednesday or Saturday morning.
The grade is gentle. Every walk is short and on request, and every tasting is taught. Days five and eight are long on the road, about three and a quarter and three and a half hours, each split into two legs. We run it April to November, and October is the month we would choose, with the Moschofilero harvest and the first grape-spirit stills. Departures are Monday or Thursday only, because the winery at Velies and Lela’s close on Sundays and Mondays.
