About the place

The capital of the Menalon villages.

Dimitsana sits at 950 metres on a long limestone balcony, looking down into the Lousios gorge. It is the largest of the five western-Menalon villages, the most visited, and the natural base for the central Arcadia loop.

The village was settled in the late 16th century by refugees from the destroyed Byzantine settlement of Trochanitsa, and grew through the 17th and 18th centuries as a centre of gunpowder production — eight watermill-driven mills along the river were used by the Greek revolutionaries in 1821. The mills are still there, a 20-minute walk down through the gorge, restored as the Open-Air Water-Power Museum (€4, daily 10–17, closed Tuesdays). Above, the village is a working set of stone lanes — schist houses on three or four levels, slate roofs, vine-shaded courtyards, three traditional tavernas (Drymonas on the square, To Kafeneio for slow lunches, Mavromatis for the long dinner). The Ecclesiastical Museum in the old Patriarchal School is small and worth thirty minutes — manuscripts, ecclesiastical silver, a 17th-century printed Bible. The view from the upper village west across the Mainalon firs and south to the gorge is the photograph people come for. Stay two or three nights; pair with Stemnitsa (10 min south) and Karytaina (35 min south-west).

01Water-Power Museum — The 18th-century gunpowder and milling complex restored as an open-air museum, 20 minutes downhill in the gorge. €4. The cultural anchor of the village.
02Stone village walking — Three or four levels of schist lanes, slate-roofed houses, vine courtyards. Walk it slowly — coffee on the square, a glass of tsipouro at four.
03Menalon Trail — Stage two of the eight-stage long-distance walk starts in Stemnitsa and runs through Dimitsana. The whole trail end-to-end takes eight days.
04Three tavernas — Drymonas (square, all-day), To Kafeneio (slow lunches, hilopites), Mavromatis (long dinner, lamb on the bone). Book ahead in winter.
