About the place

Eight stages, eight stone villages.

The Menalon Trail is a 75-kilometre marked long-distance walk along the eastern flank of the Menalon range, linking Stemnitsa in the south to Lagkadia in the north through eight Arcadian stone villages.

Certified by the European Ramblers Association in 2015 — only the second trail in Greece to receive the Leading Quality Trail badge. The trail runs 75 kilometres in eight stages, each a comfortable day’s walk (10–14 km, 4–7 hours, with the Lousios crossing the most demanding). The villages on the route are: Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Zygovisti, Elati, Vytina, Nymphasia, Magouliana, Valtesiniko, Lagkadia — all stone, all with at least one taverna and a small guesthouse, all small enough that you arrive on foot and feel you have earned the bed. The full traverse takes four to six days; many walkers do half (three or four stages, three days) using a base in Dimitsana or Vytina. The terrain is varied — limestone gorge (the Lousios crossing), Greek-fir forest (Vytina), high meadow (Magouliana, 1,300 m). Best months are May (wildflowers), September and October (cool, clear); avoid July–August (hot, dry). Local outfitters provide luggage transfer between guesthouses (€15–€20 per bag per day) — leave a duffel, walk with a daypack. There is a single official topo guide (Anavasi) and a marked GPX route.
